Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were many immigrants from Fujian and Guangdong living in Patani (a historical region in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula). While, they contributed to the economic development of Patani, some of the interest and wonderful stories by words of mouth well known by people, such as the legend of Lin Dao Qian. According to the Southeast Asia folklore, Lin Dao Qian was one of the best pirates in the Ming Dynasty. He led his followers to live in Patani and many legends started from that time. Nowadays, the legends which related to Lin Dao Qian is still spread and well known by the resident in Patani. This article is a research about Lin Dao Qian, by using the China historical document to dig and discuss on his deeds. Its included Lin Dao Qian's hometown, rise, personality, life experience. Taiwan’s local chronicles also records about the history of Lin Dao Qian. Therefore, the saying that Lin Dao Qian has been to Taiwan is well-known by the local residents. As the name of Lin Dao Qian became widely known, the related legends continue spread by the immigrants from Fujian and Guangdong in Patani. Some of the legends which related to Lin Dao Qian, such as: The Mosque Without Roof, Lin Dao Qian A Man Who Made A Gun and Killed Himself, The Origin of The Name of Road Sembilan, and The Legend of Tanjung Aguk (also known as Tanjung Luluk), are all related to Lin Dao Qian. Rumours that Lin Dao Qian had a sister in Patani named Lin Cizhen, and people called her Lin Gu Niang. According to legends, Lin Gu Niang suicided herself in Pattani. After her death, local people went to her tomb to memorize her. Hereafter, the local elites of Chinese descent from Patani move Lin Gu Niang's incense to the Temple Ling Ci Sheng Gong. Over the time, the belief of local residents to Lin Gu Niang increasingly prosperous and became the local religious.
