Compared to other countries, researches on astronomy were conducted later in Taiwan. People couldn’t find astronomy-related equipment, associations studying astronomy, and publications on astronomy until Taiwan was under Japanese rule. During the period, an association, Astronomical Observation Camerata, was established in 1939, and later in 1940, the astronomy magazine, 《南の星》, was published. In the magazine, people could read a wide variety of articles featured in astronomy, which served as vital sources of astronomy knowledge for Taiwanese at that time. Besides these articles, records of astronomy-related events held by the association, Astronomical Observation Camerata , and member lists of all periods were included in the magazine as well. The dissertation is aimed to study the act of Japanese introducing astronomy into Taiwan. What’s more, the dissertation also takes aim at understanding how the association, Astronomical Observation Camerata, and the astronomy magazine, 《南の星》, promoted the astronomy knowledge in Taiwan. To achieve the two aims, the dissertation takes the astronomy magazine, 《南の星》, as the main material to carry out the analysis. In the dissertation, analysis of the magazine contents is conducted to examine what kind of astronomy knowledge the magazine, 《南の星》, was trying to transfer, and to explore important features of the magazine. With the analysis of the member lists in the magazine, the dissertation hopes to find out the different occupations of each member in the association. Last but not least, by analyzing the records of the astronomy-related events, the dissertation intends to get a grasp of how these members with different occupations run the association , Astronomical Observation Camerata. How events such as astronomical observation, lectures, and the interaction among these members were held to meet the objectives of popularizing astronomy will also be discussed in the dissertation.
