Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station has been working to promote and assist the organic producer to grow the medicinal plants which can be used to prevent the malignant tumor, cerebrovascular and diabetes. However, in the process of production and sales, there are some issues that need to be solved. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons why the organic medicinal plants were introduced to Hualien¸ analyze the distribution and development of bred new bitter gourd cultivars, salviae miltiorrhizae and angelica acutiloba, and do the case study on the management of three organic farms. The results of the study indicate that angelica acutiloba has been planted in Hualien since 1960. In 2004, Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station introduced the three medicinal plants to organic farms. With the perfect natural environment, Hualien is suitable for organic farming. The farming area of bred new bitter gourd cultivars, salviae miltiorrhizae and angelica acutiloba is the biggest in Taiwan. The case analyses of the three organic farms are focused on the organic certification of the primary production, the secondary agricultural product processing, and the tertiary agricultural product marketing as well as the development of tourism and leisure industry. The benefits of organic farming have been increasing since then. Organic farming is on the way toward the sixth industrial sector. It needs the assistance from the government in expanding its production, processing and marketing. Organic medicinal plants farming can be integrated with tourism and leisure industry, protect ecological environment, and create high economic profit which is also an alternative way of sustainable agriculture in Hualien.
