The subject of this thesis is photographic creations stemming from the life experience of its author. It attempts to use photographic creations as art therapy to heal the feelings of mild depression in the author’s own life. Apart from a series of work comprising of individual images, it also adds images which aptly express the emotions of the time. Together, they have been compiled into a photobook, a way of displaying photographs that has gradually become more popular in recent times. In order to achieve an even more complete record of the creative process, the creative results will also be shown in an exhibition.
The author has named this series of work,《I Pay No Attention to Your Worries》. This has the effect of allowing the viewer to be even more curious about these works. Additionally, through the series of photographs where the author is concerned about his own feelings of depression, he hopes that it will lead the masses to be more concerned about the effects of being prone to depression. He hopes that it will encourage more people to spend more time and energy paying attention to this subject. Through the means of the content of his research, he hopes to bring awareness to depression, an illness which is widespread and of high frequency in our modern society.
This thesis has been divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the background and impetus for the creative works. It discusses the author’s process and journey of studying photography and talks about the goal of this particular series of work. The second chapter focuses on research into existing literature; it will introduce photographic creations which are related to self-therapy. From current materials, the author learns more about, emulates and understands the works of photographers who heal themselves through the process of photographing oneself. The third chapter talks about the author’s own creative process in this series. From the artworks, one can see the changes present in each stage of the process. It enables the reader to be clearer about the author’s process of therapy though photography. It also includes every version of the editing process of the photobook. It allows the research process to be even more complete. Chapter four is about the author’s thoughts and feelings on the process of therapy. It discusses how he feels after therapy and how the creative process has helped and influenced his personal situation. The final chapter provides a conclusion to the whole body of research, as well as talks about further possibilities for development in the future.
