Purpose – Based on the stakeholder and resource based view theory, this study aims to
investigate why Chinese firms engage in corporate social performance (CSP).
Design/methodology/approach – This study uses company data from companies listed in
Shanghai stock exchange, which was collected by Taiwan economic journal (TEJ) from year
2013 to 2017.
Findings – This study found a negative relationship between degree of internationalization (DOI)
and CSP. Intangible resources were found to have negative relationship with CSP as proposed.
Relationship between leverage and CSP was negative instead of proposed positive effct and
relationship between ownership structure and CSP was found to be insignificant.
Originality/value – The research provides a better theoretical understanding of stakeholder and
RBV in respect to CSP and its antecedents. Some of the findings diverge from the extant
literature, providing important insight why Chinese companies engage in CSP.
