An action research was adopted in this study to examine elementary school students’ (third through sixth grades) participation in Newspaper in Education (NIE) clubs, hoping to establish an outside-of-the-classroom, cross-grade NIE model in the form of student club activities for teachers, students, and parents. With students’ spontaneous participation in NIE clubs, they enhance reading comprehension, increase selfunderstanding, learn to express themselves, show more concern about and judgment of daily events, and develop sound interpersonal skills. Such growth reduces counselling cases due to interpersonal communication problems and thus eases counselors’ burden. The results were as follows: 1. After participating in NIE clubs, the students enhanced their reading comprehension and had a better understanding of themselves. 2. The participation of NIE clubs enhanced students’ attention to up-to-date issues and abilities of critical thinking and expression. 3. After spontaneous participation of NIE clubs, the students enhanced their communication skills and reduced interpersonal conflicts due to misunderstandings, thus lowering teachers’ workload. Suggestions: 1. Increasing the time for NIE implementation in accordance with school regular club activities. 2. Providing diverse types of newspapers, such as the additional subscription of weekly newspapers in addition to original daily newspapers. 3. The proposed model could be promoted to other schools or classes, thus reducing teachers’ burden while dealing with conflicts among students. |
