In the 1980s, developments in leisure farming picked up pace in Taiwan. The operation of these farms mostly relied on tourism for income. And with the passage of time, such operation can become outdated easily if tourists cannot be provided with unique experiences. The ‘Ching Shan Farm’ is the subject of this case study research, and its operation, status quo, history, and resources will be analyzed via the case study technique, documentary research, and semi-structured interview. Moreover, it will clarify the operation pain points of Ching Shan Farm and the travel experiences of tourists’ pain points from a design perspective to further inquire questions and come up with solutions, as well as the creation of their implementation and testing. The result of this research is as follows;
1.In summary, the Ching Shan Farm has vast historical, cultural and natural resources as a result of the case study. In 1967, it was the “Song Ching Daylily flower dehydration factory” which is the largest modern Daylily factory with historical value in Daylily industry in Taimali. The farm looks forward to creating a niche from the 60-year-old Daylily processing factory.
2.In the early stages of design thinking, through empathy map, the pain points and the needs of Chin Shan farm’s customers are analyzed to solve the problems at hand. This includes tourists wanting to understand more about local stories and features, uncertainty about how to access the paths of the grounds, mismatch between the farm’s current logo and its current range of services, outdated display boards within the factory, and labour cost of looking after the tourists.
3.The late stages of the design. Through brain storming, picture books and design displays are the focus of the design. The picture books present the development of the farm, and the rise and fall of the Daylily industry. To allow tourists to gradually become familiar with the farm’s features and the Daylily industry, the theme of the design displays includes a map of the Daylily Mountain, the campus map of the farm, introduction to Daylily, the history of the farm and display of historical artefacts, display. Once the design has been implemented at the farm, through analyzing captured feedback from tourists, it was discovered that the tourists wanted deeper understanding of local culture. The original design was then corrected, and this design resolves part of the pain points of the farm’s owner and its tourists and strengthened the purpose of Ching Shan Farm’s presence on Daylily Mountain.
