Changes in emotions are subtle and with different layers. Influenced by outside factors, the inner mind becomes unstable and needs an outlet for personal emotions so as to let off steam. The artist went to university alone in Hualien, a place of great distance from family and friends. Such a drastic change of the environment brought in different emotional feelings from before. In order to relieve such unstable feelings, the artist often diverted herself from them by observing scenery in nature and found inspiration for artistic creation. On the other hand, it also seemed as though the artist was going down a secret path to the self while looking for personal identity. The Statement of this study focuses on and organizes the artist’s works between 2017 and 2022, mainly ceramic sculptures, which transform personal subtle emotional changes into different organic forms in nature. The title Mi • Jin (meaning “quietness” and “ashes” respectively in Mandarin Chinese), closely homophonic with mijing (“secret places”), describes a person’s emotional changes within the inner self. Sometimes quiet and plain, sometimes fierce and violent like raging fire, they can also be presented as the future regrowth out of the ashes after the fire goes out. There are five chapters in this Statement. Chapter 1 addresses the artistic background and motivation based on the artist’s very first idea and attempt to create the fluidity between personal changes in emotions and the natural world. Chapter 2 is the review of related literature. Chapter 3 shows the content of the artistic creation, combining theoretical and creative practices to search for personal creative values and positioning as well as more possibilities. Chapter 4 interprets each work in the series, and Chapter 5 concludes the Statement with four thematic perspectives of interpretation concerning the integration of various feelings into organic forms in nature.
