This thesis takes the works of Georgia O’Keeffe and those of the author as its research topics. It analyzes the meanings of flower imagery in O’Keeffe’s works, as well as how she became the feminist spirit of her era. It also traces the content and the meaning of the author’s own artwork. Why did the author choose to discuss O’Keeffe? The reason is because O’Keeffe was one of the U.S.A's iconic painters. She was engaged in painting her whole life, and later on becoming a full-time painter. O’Keeffe’s technique of magnifying the flower was an original one. She was determined to become an artist at the age of thirteen and lived until the end of the 20th century. O’Keeffe was resolutely unswerving in the road of art, and her spirit was greatly admired by others. The idea behind the author’s creative topic is to explore O’Keeffe’s work as well as to use it as a reference for her own creations. The author’s own work includes using the mediums of coloured pencils and oil paints, with twenty-three artworks altogether in this creative thesis. Their content spans various themes, including disasters, heroes rescuing beauties, and fires. The majority of the author’s works have been influenced by O’Keeffe’s artwork. A connotation behind O’Keeffe’s work is to remember the role of abstraction in realism, and to remember the role of realism in abstraction. This view has also been a great artistic inspiration to the author, thus part of her work contains elements of these creative concepts. O’Keeffe’s influence on the author is not only limited to her paintings, but also includes her experience of loneliness, her persistence towards art, her influence on contemporary times, her acceptance of the circumstances, as well as her efforts to “live in the present”. Although the author decided to study Art and Design at National Dong Hwa University at the age of fifty and finds it no small feat, she feels that “learning is a meaningful type of positive thinking”. This is also an area where the author has learned to follow the example of O’Keeffe. In terms of how O’Keeffe’s artwork has impacted upon the author, it’s the way she expressed her feelings and was unwaveringly determined in personality. At the same time, it is the best therapy for healing her internal pain.
