Following the recent implementation of the Taiwanese government’s twenty year state education policy, aesthetic perception has become a part of students’ core attainment goals. This body of research aims to construct a set of lesson plans that focus on colour and texture, which are suitable for teaching life classes in aesthetics to elementary aged schoolchildren in Grades 1 and 2. Furthermore, it analyses and records the problems the schoolchildren have in the classroom, as well as uses perception, affection, skill and experience of aesthetics perception to undergo an analysis of the results. This research is formed from the basis of theories of aesthetics education and uses design research methods. It creates formal lessons for the research targets, which are fourteen Grade 1 and 2 elementary school aged children, consisting of six girls and eight boys. The period of research was a consecutive five and a half days, a total of 20 periods of classes. Data was gathered through documentary analysis, participant observation, as well as in-depth interviews. In addition, video recording, sound recording and photography were used to further record the teaching process. The records of the students’ interview forms, their creations, their pictorial and written diaries, lesson reflection forms and lesson observation forms were used as the foundation for the research data. The results of the research are as follows: 1.“Observation”, “perception” and “creation” are the primary teaching strategies. In addition, everyday objects are used as the teaching materials for the topics, as well as integrating the sensory experiences of the five senses, which help the students explore aesthetics and understand their environment. 2.Life courses in aesthetics allow students to achieve the goals of being able to understand colour and texture, possess the skills for interpersonal communication, and gain artistic perception and creative abilities. Furthermore, implementing varied evaluation methods is helpful for understanding the multi-faceted achievements of the students. 3.This set of lessons conform to the spirit of the twenty year state education plan. They allow the students to freely explore and possess perceptive capabilities in life classes. Integrating facets of aesthetic perception into life classes help students achieve an even richer sense of beauty.
