In order to cope with the shortened product life cycle and the rapid flow of information, the research and development costs of enterprises have increased. The idea of "open innovation" was first proposed by Henry Chesbrough, who believed that enterprises should adopt open innovation, interact with external resources to reduce R&D costs and improve corporate performance. Therefore, this study incorporates the concept of new product development and explores the impact of open innovation on performance from different perspectives. Specifically, this study uses the analysis of 541 listed high-tech companies in Taiwan during 2016 to 2018 by collecting annual reports and TEJs’ financial data. The results of the study found that open innovation has a significant relationship with the performance and improvement of new products, but not with the quantities of new products. The results also show that firms adopting open innovation in the design stage of new product development can achieve better products innovation; adopting open innovation in the manufacturing stage can have more new product quantities. This study expands the understanding regarding the relationship between open innovation and new product performance, and provides important implications for theory and practice.
