The paper engages multiple case study to investigate digital preservation strategies undertaken in Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States of America. The countries chosen are differing in geographical, political and administrative structures, which, certainly, influences their digital preservation initiatives. The developed countries are represented by Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and United States of America which have a longer history of successfully digital preservation initiatives, whilst the developing countries are represented by Bangladesh, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa who have been making great steps in digital preservation. The study objectives are to find out digital preservation strategies used by countries understudy, highlights challenges encountered in digital preservation, investigate the resource capabilities of the countries in digital preservation, and offer recommendations to developing countries suitable strategies to be used in digital preservation.
The findings reveal the categories of preservation strategies which are being used by the countries, their resources like infrastructure, finances, skills and policies that play an important role in the success of digital preservation initiatives. In addition, the study discloses challenges such as technological obsolesce that are encountered by these countries when undertaking digital preservation and it lastly provides recommendations to developing countries that includes combination of limited resources and digital preservation does not work in most of the times.
It is hoped that this study will help developing countries to consider resources capability before deciding on embarking on the digital preservation.
