This research focused on the family travel experience of Vietnamese spouses in Taiwan, through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 10 interviewees, which was analyzed using spindle coding. Data showed that Vietnamese spouses played different roles when partaking in family travel in Vietnam and in Taiwan. In Taiwan, half of the respondents explained that their husband and his family decided on the travel destination. For the other half of participants, the family travel destination was chosen as a result of their own effort to research information online. In addition, the participants implied that family travel can have different meanings. In Taiwan, family travel allows them to understand Taiwan’s culture, customs and habits. Meanwhile, when traveling in Vietnam the Vietnamese spouses had a role as cultural intermediaries. Moreover, travelling back home has a special significance, as it enables them to visit relatives, it allows the two families to get to know each other, and gives their grandparents a chance to meet their grandchildren. Taiwanese family members can also learn more about the Vietnamese spouse’s hometown and country. This research also found that participants visiting relatives through marriage agencies receive less support from their husbands and children. Results also showed a difference in family travel between families with and without children. Participants who had children expressed that they felt tired during the trip because they had to take care of the children, even if they were happy to accept the additional effort. On the other hand, participants with no children expressed the view that family travel was very free and easy.
Vietnamese spouses encounter personal, interpersonal and practical constraints during family travel. On a personal level, because they have no relatives in Taiwan, participants are afraid of expressing their desire to return to Vietnam to visit family. Interpersonal constrains are mainly related to their husbands who are too busy with work to travel together. Moreover, the Vietnamese spouses’ mothers-in-law was able to influence the choice of travel destination, and this had a strong impact on the spouses’ emotional state during travel. Participants highlighted that lack of free time was one of factors which reduced opportunities for them to travel with their families. In short, Vietnamese spouses traveling with their husband and in-laws in Taiwan can create good memories and build a closer relationship. When traveling back to Vietnam to visit relatives, the Vietnamese spouses can relieve their feeling of homesickness and inform their Vietnamese family about their lives in Taiwan and how their Taiwanese families are treating them.
