The custom of bringing gift or souvenir from a trip is popular in Taiwan. These products are usually to showcase a region’s features, such as “Mochi”, a local famous rice dessert in Hualien. Amis Mochi is a brand that heavily features the cultural elements of the aborigine Amis and has been on the market from the very start. To design packaging for Amis Mochi products, the thesis is conducted with three parts. First, common cultural elements of the Amis tribe are compiled to discuss their meanings, traditional utilization, and how they have been used aesthetically in product packaging as well as their effects in terms of package forms, colors, and quality. Second, well-known packaging designs both in Taiwan and abroad, as well as designs of Hualien’s various local product packaging, are listed to display the current practices and trend in the packaging design market. The last part examines an actual packaging design project, where different designers’ opinions and experiences were collected as ideas and inspirations for the final result. After sorting and analyzing various design elements for packaging, the author concluded with improvement directions that can be implemented when personalizing and customizing creative packaging. Last but not least, actual packaging pieces resulted from projects are used here to discuss how to experiment with diverse box designs to achieve desirable outcomes.
