Regarding the release of animals, most previous research focused on the beliefs of the release groups, their ecological awareness as well as the perception gap with environmental protection groups. This study participated in observing the life release activities of a Buddhist group in Hualien, and focused on understanding why the Buddhist group insisted on the activity of "releasing life" and whether they would adjust their practices in order to adapt to the environmental protection atmosphere and public opinion pressure under the belief of releasing animals. This research employs qualitative data collection methods, including documental analysis, participant observation (participation in group study courses, participation in life release activities) and interviewing with elevant members of the group. Research questions include the meaning and purposes of the release, the method of release, and the effect of release and other related views and practices. The results of the study showed that the Buddhist group, under the belief of releasing animals, tried to adjust and conform to the current environmental protection atmosphere, such as cooperating with the government to release fish, only releasing fish species prescribed by the government, and finding suitable habitats for releasing animals as much as possible. The researcher hopes that the religious activity of life releasing in the future can truly become a pure, good and beautiful thing through the collaborative efforts among the religious groups, the academic, the public and the government.
