This Interpretive report aims to analyze and interpret the repertoire from ‘Mickey Jazz Recital and ‘Mickey Choro Recital’’, a Master’s degree recital and ‘Mickey Choro Recital’, a graduation recital. Because contemporary jazz and early traditional choro music influenced me a lot during my studies, I chose these two different styles as different themes for my two recitals. The first recital featuring a jazz quintet included nine classic and innovative contemporary jazz tunes, with me playing tenor saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet. In contrast, we played nine traditional and contemporary choro pieces in the second recital as a quartet—including a clarinet, seven-string guitar, accordion, and pandeiro—to present the form of early choro music. Through these two recitals of entirely different styles, I had developed a better understanding of harmonic framework and forms of contemporary jazz, and realized that the musical development of the clarinet is not confined to classical music and New Orleans jazz. I hope I can improve my performance skills and music integration and analysis through these two recitals and the interpretive report. Furthermore, I also wish this report will promote the understanding of contemporary jazz and choro music in Taiwan. |
