Since an undergraduate student at university, the artist has been using stones as the material for artistic creation. During the creating process, constant self-exploration and adaptation not only allow the familiarity with the use of the material but also the accumulation of practical experience. When in graduate school, it is necessary to re-examine all the aspects of personal artistic creation and understand the further application of stone material. The topic of this creative project is entitled Figure • Frame, which can be understood separately as body and limit. Using the human body as major modeling vocabulary in artistic creation, the artist hopes to exhibit the personal style of human figure design through reading and understanding body lines as a symbol. “Limit” and “line” are both pronounced as xian in Mandarin Chinese. Natural curved lines of the human body come from the influence of the physical structure and gravity; they are natural formal beauty with the human energy. Also, such curves also represent the structured regular patterns in the body. When these patterns are refined into the frame of an artwork that connects to the artist’s self, the artistic creation process would be a reflection of the artist’s life condition. This thesis has four chapters. Chapter One introduces the artist’s background, motivation, and objective. Chapter Two discusses the shared symbols between form and actual human figure from the aesthetic equation for the human body. Chapter Three describes the techniques and ideas adopted in the current project while looking back at the previous works by the artist. Chapter Four is the exhibition of the artworks in the series as well as the explanation of their ideas.
