Abstract The title of the thesis "Dance of the Ink and Song of the Brush" is derived from the idioms that praise the literary talent and mastery of calligraphy. This thesis is inspired by my solo exhibition, Ink Dance, held in the Art Museum of Hualien Cultural Bureau in 2019. In this thesis, I would like to discuss and illustrate the research and creation process of poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
Poetry, calligraphy, and painting each have their own expertise. Poetry is classified as the development of humanistic spirit, ideas, and Chinese literature. Orthodox calligraphy is known as the model calligraphy or calligraphy masterpiece. The main features of Chinese characters include the aesthetics of pictogram, as well as phonetic and semantic elements. There are many changes in writing styles and techniques which makes calligraphy an unique art in the world. The foundation of Chinese painting lies in calligraphy. Although many factions develop, they generally express their connotations with brush lines, artistic conceptions, and aesthetics.
Poetry, calligraphy, and painting are also tightly connected to each other. Specifically, poetry and calligraphy can be combined, calligraphy and painting have the same origin, and poetry and painting are interconnected. According to an old legend, the creator who can master poetry, calligraphy, and painting is honored with the title “Three Wonders”.
This paper focuses on the discussion of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The first chapter is the introduction. The second chapter explores the relevance of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The third chapter discusses the creation method and application of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The fourth chapter illustrates the practice of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. And last but not least, Chapter 5 is the conclusion.
