Burnout has been pervasively studied in the industrial and organizational domains. Among them, the developing mechanisms and consequences of burnout were the primary focus. The most common concepts of burnout include emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Psychotherapists often experience burnout because of emotional stress and high caseloads, diminishing their work performance and quality of life.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between burnout, cognitive function, and two types of implicit attitudes. Three hypotheses were tested: A. inhibition predicting emotional exhaustion, B. implicit attitude toward clients predicting depersonalization, and C. implicit self-efficacy predicting reduced personal accomplishment.
The study investigated the impact of burnout on cognitive function and implicit attitudes and also proposed a new method for assessing burnout through cognitive function and implicit attitude.

The result showed that: (1) psychotherapists who engaged in more indirect services/less direct services had worse inhibition function. (2) psychotherapists with lower personal accomplishment had more positive implicit attitude toward their clients. For the hypothesized relationships, no significant correlation was observed in this study. The complexity of psychotherapists, personality factors, and burnout in Taiwan could be related. Research limitations were also addressed.
