The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the way of life of human beings. Many literatures focused on the impact and crisis of COVID-19 pandemic on human mental health. However, most of the previous studies focused on the discussion of various indicators of mental health, but seldom discussed the overall or individual psychological process. Moreover, from the perspective of stress-stimulus response, most of the aforementioned literature regarded the epidemic or pandemic as a stressful event and discussed people’s physical and mental adaptation and adjustment.
Through the method of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), this study explored the psychological impact and transformation process of the people in the COVID-19 era. The researcher adopted a semi-structured approach and conducted individual in-depth interviews with research participants of three experiences, namely "those who have not been infected with the COVID-19 virus and have been quarantined", "those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus themselves", "the general public who have not been infected with the COVID-19 virus”, a total of six participants. The researcher referred to Langdridge's interpretative phenomenology data collection and analysis steps, as well as Lee 's method of exploring human psychological phenomena with a dematerialized approach, to conduct text analysis and interpretation.
Under the unique experience phenomenon of the research participants, the researcher summarized five psychological impact and four psychological transformation processes, and described the back and forth phenomena between psychological impact and psychological transformations. This study found that the common themes of the psychological impacts in the COVID-19 era were: "death and body threat anxiety", "identification anxiety and stigma anxiety in fusion with viruses", "decompleted interpersonal experience and interpersonal boundaries change", "the moral dilemma of curtailing freedom and group security". As for the process of psychological transformation, the researcher summarized four transformation processes as follows: "the shock and fear of sudden unknown threats, the pursuit of dependence under powerlessness", "a sense of mastery from the unknown to the known", " actions as constructions", "self-care and the rediscovery of self-meaning".
In the relationship between psychological impact and transformation, the researcher referred to the four ultimate concerns of scholar Irvin D. Yalom (death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness) to discuss and dialogue with the research questions, and found that the relationship between psychological impact and psychological transformation could be viewed as a set of situatedness-negative situatedness. The relationship between the two formed a new situation towards balance through the anxiety triggered by the shock and the loss caused by the transformation. In terms of follow-up research and helping professional practice, the researcher put forward relevant suggestions based on the "phenomena of the times and situated experiences" as the perspective of attention.
