To establish the government of the Republic of China, the Qing Dynasty government and the Provisional Government of the R.O.C. established the “Articles of Favorable Treatment” (Chinese: 清室優待條件) to protect the royal family of the Qing Dynasty after the abdication. However, the “Articles of Favorable Treatment” was controversial during its formulation process in 1912. Despite, Feng Yu-Xiang took the liberty of revising it in 1924, it was still regarded as an important document by the people of the time.
This research attempts to contextualize the Beijing Government’s attitude toward the royal family of the Qing Dynasty during the time 1912 to 1924. In order to reflect the transformation of the Beijing Government’s attitude and its influences, the study is organized by concentrating on issues such as restoration, “Articles of Favorable Treatment”, an annual subsidy of four million taels for the royal family of Qing Dynasty, the property of the royal family, and Puyi’s wedding, leading to further exploration to the causes behind Puyi’s expulsion, from the Forbidden City in 1924. |
